Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Scenes from a cold day

I know its not the same as Chai Chai's extra, extra cold but wowza!   It was cold this morning with a windchill about 7*.

We are expecting a really cold and windy snap for this week. They are calling for single digit temperatures at night even without the wind. So we'll be bedding everyone down deeply, feeding several times a day, and taking fresh water out at least twice a day. We are also making sure everyone is out of the wind and tacking up tarps as needed.

We'll be out there again tomorrow morning as soon as the sun hits the hen house but for now, here's what happened....

First the ducks marched out for another round of lobbing snowballs in Chai Chai's general direction...

Then it was nothing but puppies - big and small - all doggin' around in the snow...

They were adorable...

Then the geese marched over to join in the fun.

We actually got some real work done also. Even tho it was 11* we dressed a couple more of our creepy meat chickens. We only have 4 left to do so we are almost done. And we've enjoyed every bite.

Last nite we made chicken medallions dredged in flour, fried in chicken fat, and served with a garlic rosemary cream sauce. Over polenta and with green beans... oh golly. Worth every creepy second.

Happy Freezing Cold Everyone!

Look at all the foot prints (web prints?) in the snow, nothing seems to slow down the daily routine!

One of life's truisms is dogs love snow - period.

Nothing says farming like hauling water twice daily, joy, joy, joy. Time for another "Cup of Cheer"!

Brrrr...that's really cold!I'm surprised the animals can just walk around in that cold - they must have developed extra feathers or fat before the winter. Do people get hungry all the time in the cold?

I did put a little comment in Hot Buttered Rum...
