I have really been missing real food lately. Here in that weird space between bitter winter and the greening of spring it's agonizing waiting around for the growing season to start.
I really miss celery.
The other day I needed to get some celery from the store. But after this story broke I couldn't help but look at it suspiciously. I'm getting more and more wary of store food. I can't tell if there really are more outbreaks like this or if there is just better tracking. Either way, I can't wait for real food. From my yard. Especially being able to go out and load up the lettuce bucket any old time I want.
It looks like we have another week of cold. I'm holding off on starting anymore seeds because our morning are going to be so bitter cold. Hopefully my peaches will be OK.
Until we get back into the swing of the growing season let's all just think good thoughts about celery.....

We're the same here. Soon we hope to have a poly tunnel so we can have green veg all the year round. Like you, I don't trust supermarket veg. In fact, I don't trust any food bought from the supermarket. I think we are both very fortunate to be able to grown our own, despite the fickleness of the weather.
you said it, Vera. i saw how you were out of jam.. i was in the same boat so i made some small-batch strawberry. unfortunately i had to get them from the store but at least i knew they were well cooked and that i could control the sugar! yay us!
Very frustrating here - the perennials all came up because it was spring, then winter came back and killed everything. Hoping the asparagus and pears can recover. I am pretty sure nothing is ever going to grow again here except maybe chickweed
We just hit a record high for our area. It is 85 degrees. We had to rescue the meat chickens from the greenhouse. Too hot! Now they are in my kitchen until it cools a bit and tomorrow some changes will have to happen.

PJ that is crazy! can you let the meats toddle around in the yard? or they are still too little? a low fence will keep them contained. :-)
we are going to make a fenced area in the garden or yard for them. Tomorrow will be just as hot here during the day but mid 40s at night. We have had the light on for them at night but off during the day. They have done well in the greenhouse so far until today. They are about 3 weeks old.
sounds like you have a good set up! if you need a quick fence you might be able to make a "run" out of a couple of hog panels attached to the greenhouse? that way they could come and go. great work with the light. i'd keep that on at nite for them for a couple more weeks. great job!
We're in Northeast Ohio Amish country and in the same boat you are. We were outside so excited to be DOING SOMETHING again, and then BANG. Trapped indoors with a mucky snowy yucky yard and nothing but clouds. We also don't trust store produce, so we end up cooking most of our bought veggies. I can't explain how much I could go for a strawberry or a fresh piece of cucumber or some watermelon.... but I'm sure you know! Anyway, best of luck with this roller coaster part of the season.

Real food. Yes please. Supermarket veg is so gross, especially in rural areas - I'm that crazy lady standing in the produce department muttering and cursing under her breath trying to find something, anything that I'm willing to feed us. We buy a minimal amount of pre-packaged baby food from the grocery, an organic major-brand kind, and even THAT has had a recall recently due to defective packaging.
