Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Lovely lettuce lunch!

Finally! For the last several days I've been able to have a salad for lunch - entirely from my salad bowl planters. Look how beautiful!

Just look at that lettuce!

Altho they won't last long... I've really been enjoying the sugar snap peas - both the pods and some of the shoots. The celery is perfect right now, and I'm finally getting some basil. What a joy to have salad back!

In other news... The Loud Bugs are still loud. I've taken to watching really loud movies inside, with the windows closed, and the air conditioning cranked. Town people still don't believe me about how loud it is..... the constant alien noises are super duper annoying.

But The Loud Bugs don't like the cold.  The other morning it was 44* and stunningly beautiful - and silent. Today will be really hot and so they are already loud.

Also, I have completely lost control of the poultry. Starting on Monday I need to whip the troops into shape. There were some bad nests in the hen house, a duck and a hen fighting each over over a nest, and apparently one of the ducks is down on the pond....where she won't last. Once the troops find out you've gone soft it's nothing but work work work to get things sorted back out.

Happy Saturday everyone!

I sympathise with the poultry. It is chaos here. We took all of the red rangers to be butchered this week so that helped a little, but a couple of wild mallard drakes have the ducks all stirred up and in this state they've learned that they can get over the fence. There's no stopping them. Thsi morning they were on the road which was the last straw. Neighbors heard quite a bit of fowl (ha!) language out of my mouth. They're currently on lockdown until i can figure out what to do with them. They can't stay here. Ugh! Stay cool today.

hooray for lettuces! Trying to stay ahead of it here... just dropped some off to the food pantry - there is no way I can use it all up before it bolts.

No bugs but plenty of heat here.

Happy Summer!

Hey at what age do ducks start to lay eggs? We "accidentally" came home with a couple of baby ducks when we were at the feed store for meat chicks in March. We don't know if they are boys or girls. Hopefully they will eat some of the slugs that keep eating my plants.

It's been so gross. Have you read *that* post over @ NW Edible about boy duck parts? Yeah, every single morning. All over my yard. Kinda makes me want to cry a little.

are you kidding, CTF? i LOVE that gal!! ha! she is just terrific and we were all horrified. i ended up being pals with her over it.

hey PJ!... usually the next season.... what breed are your new accidental ducks? some are more productive than others. and ha! yep sure... accidental...
:-D
i absolutely love my ducks. they have made a huge dent in our bug problem and are such easy keepers. even in the winter they do great.

Well the ducks were in a tub marked "assorted ducks " so I am not sure of the breed. We think the black one is a Cayuga and the light one is crested. We don't really care about the eggs so much as possible slug control. I was just hoping we don't have two males in case they might fight. They are completely different personalities. The black one is very friendly.

they will be all over those slugs. good on you! yeah so - if they start laying it will be in your early spring. but if they are boys thats just fine too. we have never had a bad drake fighting problem at all. in fact our three some is 2 drakes and a hen. so probably not a huge worry for you. i kinda love their quacking all around.
