Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Good works and eggs

I can't stand it.. I have to share one more skip poppin' pic.... check out the air this little one is catching as she was chasing the ducks....
As I looked at this I realized that most of our animals are black, white, or black and white. I'm not sure if we did that on purpose or not.

We've had some crazy days here lately. Heck, I think we all have.  Just turn on the news and you might get the heebie jeebies as, Small Farm Girl says. My golly if it isn't some crazy Middle East dictator, $105 a barrel oil, over the top grocery store prices, the train wreck that is Charlie Sheen, or for heavens sakes, the nightmare inducing line up on this season's Dancing with the Stars....its enough to send a person into fits.

But there's help. Do you want to know the secret to staying sane thru it all?

Go and help someone else.

We had the good fortune to help someone today and wow do I feel better. A couple weeks ago one of my pals asked me to save up 4 dozen eggs for her incubator. When she didn't call to arrange a time to pick them up, I wondered why? Then she told me that they suffered a dreadful family ordeal. Its not my story to tell but I will say that they are in a pickle for sure.

They are in no position to take the eggs so there were 48 lovely eggs sitting on my counter. I had no idea what to do with them. They really weren't good enough for eating because they were supposed to go in an incubator and hadn't been property chilled.  Just as I was wondering what to do, I got an email out of the blue from a fellow asking me if I had eggs available for hatching? For heavens sakes.

Two hours later my new pal was standing in my driveway. Turns out he was looking for duck and chicken eggs for his incubator. It was like he flew right down from heaven. I knew it was a blessing for sure because this fine young man actually got out of his car, looked me in the eye, and shook my hand. If you are older than the internet you know that this is a miracle, for sure.(If don't know what I'm talking about look it up on wikihow under "having good manners".)

It further turned out that while we were in a whirl last week one of our little ducks made herself a nice little nest and sat her fluffy bottom right down. So not only did I have just-started-duck-eggs, but I had plenty of chicken eggs to fill his incubator! And I gave him a very good price. Absolutely a bargain. In fact, when we have turkey eggs he'll get an even better deal.

So we did each other a favor and I think we were both happier for it.

This type of small kindness - helping each other out - is a great way to find sanity in crazy times. Its also a wonderful reminder that we are all in this together. These are hard times and we all deserve a little help. So if you have the opportunity, friend, take time to help someone else. Do you have something sitting in your garage that another could use? Can you cut someone a deal on something they need? Are you on the lookout for what you can do to help someone else? Doing good works is something we are appointed to do and you never know how your small kindness will change someone else's life.  I'm happy today because I got my counter space back and I know those eggs are going to good use.

Happy Tuesday everyone - now go and help someone!

I love the picture of the goat catching air! That's nice you and that young man were able to help each other out. It's a good feeling to do a good deed for sure.

I really like helping people out, I try to do it often. It's hard nowadays for a teenager to get some respect from strangers- for some reason everyone expects me to be texting and not caring about that sweet old couple who need help through the door.

I love shaking hands. For some reason... for some reason only reenactors like to shake hands 'round here. I am willing to shake back, no matter how "improper" it is for a girl in Civil-War-Era dress!

I too am all about hand shaking, yes mam, no sir, please and thank you. I believe in teaching by doing and I'm pretty sure The Youngun will grow up doing the same because she sees me and her daddy using good manners. Although I call it more integrity than manners and it's sure 'nuff in short supply these days!

God sure knows what He's doing doesn't He? ;0)

So glad you were able to find a match for those eggs...I bet he was excited. It does indeed do a body good to do good deeds.

Speaking of good deeds, one of the two channels we get plays Dancing with the Stars...and my wife makes me watch it with her.:( What do you think, I bet Kirstie wins this time around...she really seems excited to kick up her heals and dance.:) Although I was way off on my pick of David Hasselhoff last season, boy did he really have some groovy moves. Happy Tuesday!

Cute picture! That is what we term a two way blessing. Glad your new friend dropped out of heaven. If more people would do for others maybe there wouldn't be such a high incedence of Depression in our country. Makes my whole day when I can help someone else.
Thanks for sharing
Blessings for your day,
Kelle

Shaking hands is an essential skill! :) Unfortunately, good manners are not terribly common anymore. A lot of the time, helping people can be as simple as going out of your busy way to talk to them. There's an older gentleman that is at the coffee shop every morning. I tell him good morning every day, and he loves to talk about his job (he's a pilot), and his time in the military. Lo and behold, he surprises me with a fresh pineapple this morning, from his flight yesterday to Hawaii! All because I take the time to chat with him in the morning (and he has some pretty cool stories!). I am soooo bringing him produce from the garden this summer!

The little ones are just so darn cute!!

It really doesn't take time or effort to help others out and to do what is right and have good MANNERS!!!

Too late, I already did. There was this elderly country gentleman that was talking on the cell phone, and drove off the road into some very deep drifts, like, hood high. I was able to yank him out with the 4X4. You're right, it did feel good!

The dogs must look at the baby goats chasing the chickens and think; "Hmmm, that looks fun but feels dangerous somehow."

Amazing how someone in need arrives at the moment when you can provide help, I don't think it is a coincidence. God Bless you!

Bless you OFG!

The young man is heaven sent. Your good intention and kind thoughts made that happen. I know you are capable of that as you had lightened my burden in times of despair.

Thanks for sharing this story and for the advice. I'm pretty sure there are things around here that I can give away.

These baby goats are spring loaded, B2B! Its just crazy out there.

Great work Autumn! Most teens I know are standing in the middle of the mall texting each other. Standing next to each other. Texting. For heavens sakes! That older couple appreciates it more than you'll ever know. Believe me.

You said it GW, the blessings are falling out of the sky on us right now. Just when we need it. And I figured your Youngun would be raised up right!

It does a body good for sure, Mr. H, all the stress just left me and I had a spring in my step.

And I know you'll be watching with Mrs. H - she's lucky that way! My hubby grits his teeth and watches with me too (until he gets a twitch in his eye). I'm hoping that Kirstie wins! Most times I wait until the herd thins a bit...I think they have a couple "ladies of ill repute" on again. I'll just wait until them gals go back to where ever they came from. Yikes!

You are just right, Kelle! A little kindness goes a long way. I don't understand the people who take pride in being cruel or rude to others. The angriest people I've seen are at the grocery store. Its just silly.

That is a lovely story, Rae. I bet you were thrilled! I hope you enjoy every bite of that pineapple.

Robin - exactly. It doesnt take one second longer to be kind to someone. I had a checker at the store nearly burst into tears because I thanked her. We are all having more hard days and all need just a little extra love.

Great work, Ian! Heroes like you make people like me thank our lucky stars!

CC - one of my favorite teaches calls them "divine appointments." I just love that. The dogs think the baby goats look just about the right size - for a snack!

No, thank you Grandpa. I smile every time I see your name come up. Thank you for your kind words. Stop by tomorrow - you can't imagine what happened today!
;-)

My sentiments exactly, it was like that in the good old days (I've been here a little before the Internet :o) People were concerned about each other and shared ..and believe it or not "Your word was your Bond",or "A handshake was just as good".
Today you almost need a lawyer to buy toilet paper:o(..

You are so right sweetie. i am one of those people that CANNOT ask for help if my life depended on it - but whenever someone else needs a hand I hope they call on me. It's such a good feeling, you know? Maybe because it's the Right Thing To Do.
