Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Farmageddon - The Movie

Thanks to Tracey who pointed me to a great new movie trailer, Farmageddon.Wow!

Remember when we talked about the Amish guy who was raided by the feds for selling raw milk across state lines? This movie sounds like its going to shine a light on theses issues. And show how small farms are in jeopardy.

Everyone wants to buy locally, right? Support local farms - its a great idea, right? Who wouldn't want that? Your government, it seems. I don't know if they really are pandering to big corporations or not - but I'm pretty sure they aren't trying to protect us.

Raids on farm families? Guns drawn on the Amish? Gosh. Its a crazy world.

Someone asked me just the other day if I sold my produce at the local farmer's market. Heck no - there is no way I'm going to sign up for that liability - or that kind of regulation. Sell eggs to friends? No way. Would I love to be a boutique cheese maker? Yes - but there is no way I could afford it.

Here's the thing, there are hungry people in our communities, but no one wants to take the risk to feed them. And, instead of making it easier to produce and sell locally grown food, its getting harder. Doesn't that seem weird to you?

Sure I understand the argument that food should be safe. But there are no guarantees or controls what happens once that food leaves the farm stand. I knew a gal who didn't practice sanitary kitchen procedures at all. Sure her counters were neat and wiped down - but I also saw her lick her fingers after she handled raw meat...more than once.  And which of us hasn't cringed when we saw someone use the same cutting board to make a salad that was just used to cut raw meat? How could a producer be responsible for that?  At some point aren't folks responsible for what they put in their mouth?

I don't know, something is crazy here. I'm kind of wondering if we are working ourselves toward outlawing all food and only being "allowed" some kind of space goo or protein pills provided by your government - who is here to help, right?

Come on Farm Pirates, lets keep an eye out for this film and spread the word. No farms, no food - I'm not eating protein pills, for sure.

This is very close to all of us. I'm pretty sure I recognize the Mennonite man in the black hat. If it's the guy I think it is then he lives in the town just over. We've bought several sides of beef from him. He's been raided several times for raw milk. His response: "I'm just going to keep doing what I do."

Kinda reminds me of the movie Soylent Green, here's a quote: "Soylent red and Soylent yellow, high energy vegetable concentrates, and new, delicious, Soylent green. The miracle food of high-energy plankton gathered from the oceans of the world."

I'll munch a protein pill as long as it is made from well seasoned ground pork that I cured, smoked and cooked myself. Bah to big governement!

So sad. To think that the government wastes precious dollars on the little things and ignores the big things because someone is lining their pockets.

I just saw a commercial for a (don't even know what to call it) something or other you could give to toddlers to boost brain activity.

When we were kids they were called vegetables. Apparently there is a powder for that now. Synthetic no less.

:(

Hi there! It's "maggiesfamily" from backyardherds. :)

I am *dying* to see this movie! It's a shame the government keeps going after the wrong people. Where is the crime in trying to be healthy? With all the outcries from the government about childhood obesity and other diseases/ailments, one would think that they would be more supportive of people trying to eat healthy.

Have you heard about the lady facing misdemeanor charges for growing veggies in her front yard? AMAZING! I don't have the link, but you can google "oak park hates veggies" and get her blog/facebook

Anyway, so glad for the link to your blog. Looking forward to reading and learning!

He Jody - I hope he keeps on keepin' on. Great work on supporting him.

You said it, Mary.

Tracey - it reminds me of every SciFi movie that has "food squares." Ugh!

Isnt it ridiculous, Robin? Talk about over reaching, "you cant use those lightbulbs, you can drink that milk, and take that carrot out of your mouth before it makes you sick!"

Bah is just right, Dave. We farm pirates need to stick together. I don't think most folks know what this might mean to them.

TAPG - yep, I've seen the same thing. Its beginning to sound a lot like "Oh no - dont nurse your own baby... its not sanitary. You need to buy THIS product from us because its better."

Hey Bobbi! WOW I looked up the link for that gal in Detroit. Holy crap - what is the matter with people?

Has everyone seen this????

What do you get when you cross good farms with Star Wars? Grocery Store Wars! My cousins showed this to me over the weekend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVrIyEu6h_E
It's a hoot! Cuke Skywalker vs. Darth Tater, what more could you ask for in fine entertainment?? Other than watching the chickens chasing bugs that is...

Funny, I was just talking about this to someone else recently. I would just love to be able to make enough money off our excess to pay our electricity bill - then I'd know I could survive with just the farm if I had to go it alone for some reason. I sell eggs to friends... but shhhhh! I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong but I'm kind of afraid to look. :/ I'd REALLY love to have a CSA, to sell excess produce, preserves, breads, and especially cheese. But there's no way I want to go through all the licensing and patrolling and scrutiny for that - so those dreams will have to wait.

Anon - yep I just love that!

SSF - I know folks who do the CSA thing and with all your great gardening I know that you would be successful. Just get all your info up front - and make sure your insurance will still cover you. Ours told us up front that if we farm for profit we would need to find someone else. Sheesh!

Talk about control, search for "sustainable development" and see what the Government has coming for us. It's happening in over 600 US cities already. It's not the same as sustainable freedom.
