Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Potatoes are lookin' good

We were supposed to get a good soaking last nite and today... wow do we need the rain! We got enough rain to knock the dust off the truck but that's about it.

Looks like I might have to drag out the sprinklers tomorrow but for now these potatoes are looking pretty good.

Some of these taters are going to be harvested when they start to flower. I can't wait... I've got some duck fat saved to roast them up right.

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you got a good rain for your garden... or for some of you... hope you got a dry spell and send your rain this way!

Oh wonderful rain. It started raining in our area about 7 pm yesterday evening, a good soft soaking rain...and rained for a solid 12 hours. I am so relieved I wont be dragging hoses! Sending the "love" your way!! I hope you get plenty today. Your potato's look great! Mine are about the same...however, most of my friends and neighbors in this area are already covering theirs. I got mine in late.

The last few weeks have been so dry I have been doing rain dances in the pasture. Guess I danced a little too hard though. Got caught in torrential downpour, huge chunks of hale and 60 mph winds on the way to TSC yesterday. Note to self: dance less.

Damn, I am jealous. My taters got a late start due to to much rain. They aren't even up yet.

We finally got that rain, DHA!, whew... they were calling it a "Million Dollar Rain" for the farmers. wow!

Easy there, Kaela... rain = yes, crazy storms = zoikes!

We got early planting weather for sure, Damummis... I can't wait for the new potatoes. yay!

Last year we were drowning so I'm glad for a dry spell but it was getting just a bit too dry. Hope you didnt get too soggy - I saw the storm blow thru your part of the world. :-)

Those potatoes look great! Do you have problems with bugs? We can't even put potatoes out because of them. I don't want to spray them, but if I was to have potatoes, I would have to. What do you do?

hey SFG! We get some bugs but not enough to do a ton of damage. I've spritzed a few with that Safer insecticide soap. And really - having so many pieces of poultry really helps us. I think we are going to have an early/bad bug year so I'm probably going to step up my efforts and try and hand pick them (ick).
