Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

Blueberries and bee update

The blueberries have come on!

Yay! Now I just have to keep the birds from eating them.

About those beez from yesterday... they flew away. Good thing my husband didn't drop what he was doing and rush home. The beez were gone less than an hour after I took the picture. When he got home, tho, he looked all around for them. Nothing. We think it's kind of a weird time for hives to split but hey - if we can snag some free beez then that's OK with us.

Happy Thursday everyone!  How are your beez and berries?

Too bad about the bees! I was quite lucky with them this year. First, I lost 4 out of 5 hives, but I always clean out the dead hives and keep empty ones around . . . and . . . 5 swarms moved in! Now I've got 6 booming hives and hope to harvest honey tomorrow if the weather is good.

We're harvesting red and black currants but the blueberries aren't ripe yet. Lots and lots of wild black raspberries--delicious! I'll have to dig around the potatoes and check . . .

As i walked for exercise I saw 11 ant nests swarming along a 2 mile route. I think it is the time of year for them all to split.

My blueberry bush is fruiting this year first time. When do you pick yours, when they just turn blue?
