Ohiofarmgirl's Adventures in The Good Land is largely a fish out of water tale about how I eventually found my footing on a small farm in an Amish town. We are a mostly organic, somewhat self sufficient, sustainable farm in Ohio. There's action and adventure and I'll always tell you the truth about farming.

We butchered the wrong chickens!

Wow was it an epic creepy meat chicken harvest this weekend! We cleaned out the garage of all the meats and now the beer fridge is full of chicken dinners just waiting to happen. We were over joyed at our full harvest, we congratulated ourselves on a job well done. We even sent that one last meat roo to his glory and then.....

Eggs!

We realized we butchered the wrong chickens! Bah!

I had to buy eggs this weekend because the lazy ladies out in the layer hen house haven't given up the goods in days. Not one egg.

So you can imagine my surprise when I was cleaning out the meat chicken pen in the garage and I found... eggs.

Yep. It's pretty bad when your meat chickens are your best layers.

Chicken!
Those slackers out in the hen house had better get with the program or they will end up in the skillet.

Happy Monday everyone! Are your meat chickens laying eggs?  What about your laying hens?

Hi!
Try giving your layers a bit more protein - meal worms, scramble a few eggs (they love something warm in cold weather). I've even heard (and tried) shaking out a bag of cat kibbles will provide some missing minerals from their diet,

hey anon! thanks and yep we just need to get a bag of layer mash. they were producing pretty well and then tanked. i think once our seasons sort themselves out that we'll be back in business again. we also stopped having the light on b/c we thought we were past that point. it was just funny that our meats were laying instead! ha!

My layers have just started laying again! We got the first egg a few days ago. Now we are getting one or two a day. I thought they were amazing last year because they kept laying all winter but my brother told me it's just that they are young.
